The Lutheran congregation in Banská Bystrica, Slovakia observed the end of the school year for students of the Lutheran High School with a special worship service held in the church on June 27, 2025 and attended by students, teachers, educational leaders of the community, and the pastors of the congregation, Pastor Daniel Koštial and Pastor Slávka Koštialová. This service not only brought a close to the school year, but also highlighted the gifts and skills of the students, and recognized the accomplishments of various students in their fields of study. Also in attendance were Bishop Wilma Kucharek and Pastor Thomas S. Drobena, who preached the sermon on this special occasion.
Interestingly, a pastor/teacher of this same Lutheran High School in Banská Bystrica, the Rev. Andrea Valentova has been able, during the summer school break, to be a guest in our Slovak Zion Synod congregation of St. Peter and St. Paul Lutheran Church in Blue Island, Illinois. Pastor Andrea, who was also hosted by the congregation in Blue Island last summer, has been well-received by the congregation and is grateful for the many experiences this opportunity has given her. It is interesting to note that she is also a past participant of our Synod’s Trainee Immersion Program, having spent a summer in a congregation as a seminarian before completing her studies for ordination as a pastor in the church.
