The Lutheran congregation in Sobotište, Slovakia celebrated the 240th anniversary of the consecration of their church in 1784. This festive occasion took place on November 10, 2024 and also celebrated the completion of the repairs on their church tower, which was observing its 115th anniversary.

The day began with a special worship service led by the congregation’s Pastor Marcel Ištván and members of the congregation and special visiting choir. Also participating in the liturgy were: Bishop Ivan Elko of the Lutheran Church in Slovakia who highlighted in his sermon the spiritual significance of the building of their church 240 years ago; Pastor Hanka Peničková and Pastor Lubomir Batka who joined Pastor Ištván and Bishop Elko at the altar; and Bishop Wilma Kucharek who brought reflections and greetings from the Slovak Zion Synod—ELCA, and Pastor Miroslav Hvoždara from Vrbovce who brought greetings as the Dean of their conference. In addition, a noteworthy summary of the congregation’s history was presented by former pastor Lubomir Batka.

A celebratory lunch with table grace offered by Pastor Hvoždara followed the worship service, after which those participating in this festive day attended a concert in the church featuring the visiting choir Zvony from the Slovak Lutheran Church in Serbia.
