Two ELCA synods, the New England Synod and the Southeastern Pennsylvania Synod, elected new bishops at their synod assemblies this spring. The Southeastern Pennsylvania Synod elected the Rev. Bryan Penman on May 4, succeeding retiring Bishop Patricia Davenport, and the New England Synod elected the Rev. Nathan Pipho on June 7, succeeding retiring Bishop James Hazelwood. Both synods are part of the ELCA’s Region 7, along with the Slovak Zion Synod, New Jersey Synod, Metropolitan New York Synod, Upstate New York Synod, and Northeastern Pennsylvania Synod.
In addition to Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton, bishops representing the Episcopal Church, and ecumenical guests, bishops and representatives from the seven synods of Region 7, and other ELCA synods participated in the installations of the new bishops. The Installation of Bishop Pipho took place on September 7, 2025 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Worcester, Massachusetts. The Installation of Bishop Penman took place on September 14, 2025 at the Philadelphia Episcopal Cathedral in Philadelphia.
