As the pastor’s sidekick, my first tasks included paying at least one visit a day to various members of our church, who aren’t able to come anymore. Although I only experienced a few, I know that this part of my work here is going to be very pleasant. Indeed, putting a smile on people’s faces is always worth it. Despite the fact that I’ve never visited people at places like memory care center, or hospital, for that matter, I feel very good making them happy, and can’t wait for seeing them again to find out everything that happened in the meantime.
Another thing i really enjoy is coming to the Redeemer Lutheran Church, where we help with children’s bible school. Our main task is to go over the Bible stories with the teenagers that actually take care of the camp. But right after mentioning I played guitar, I became the camp’s musician, so I can spend some time with the children too. At our last meeting, I tried to teach them a bilingual song that comes with a dance. I was quite amused by them trying to pronounce the words, even singing them. It went both ways, I guess.
A thing that surprised me was the homeless shelter. I’ve never been to a place like that before. After a quick tour around, I was told that just my presence sheds bright light through its gates. That was when I realized there are a lot of people needing our care, or perhaps just attention. Anyway, I feel God is using me as His voice and hands in many various ways.
It’s almost been two weeks now, and I’m starting to love this place and people. When I first arrived, I liked the welcoming environment, kind people, and all was very curious about all the differences between our churches, but now, I’m truly becoming a part of the congregation, and I’m absolutely loving it!
