TORRINGTON, CONN (SZS) — Celebrating 25 years as a church, members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) participated in “God’s work. Our hands.” Sunday on September 8 — a dedicated day of service in which ELCA members observed the anniversary by playing a part in addressing the needs of their neighborhoods and communities.
Among the first in the Slovak Zion Synod to celebrate the occasion were the members of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Trumbull, CT, who packaged 10,000 meals for Connecticut food banks. “The project is funded by people in the congregation, and the packaging is done by volunteers in the congregation,” said the Rev. Linda J. Kraft, pastor of Holy Trinity. Shortly after worship concluded on the morning of September 8th, nearly 90 volunteers gathered to begin work. Other ‘hands’ joining in the event included Bishop Kucharek of the Synod, as well as others from neighboring congregations. Materials were provided by KidsCare, an Outreach Inc. program, and packaging began promptly at noon. Within the first hour, over 5,000 meals had already been packaged. These meals are comprised of Macaroni & Cheese, fortified with soy vegetable protein. By 2:00 pm, the 10,000 mark had been reached. The meals were shipped to food banks in Fairfield County for distribution to over 30 area food pantries.
“God’s work. Our hands.” Sunday is designed to emphasize our church’s commitment to the work of restoring communities, and pursuing peace and justice.
