TORRINGTON, CONN (SZS) Observing 25 years as a church, members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) have been participating in “God’s work. Our hands.” events — by which members throughout the church offered their hands in service to those in need. While many chose to commemorate the anniversary and observe this day of service on September 8, others offered their hands in on-going service projects.

One of the many congregations participating in a project designed to make a difference was Trinity Lutheran Church on Lacrosse Avenue in Chicago, a congregation of the Slovak Zion Synod, pastored by the Rev. James Kuemmerle and the Rev. Melissa Kuemmerle. Trinity Lutheran made 51 backpacks for Lutheran World Relief.

These backpacks were handmade by young and old alike. The rest of the congregation contributed the contents in the form of a school supply drive, so that each backpack could be filled. The contents of each backpack included five pencils, five pens, a ruler, four 70-page spiral notebooks, an eraser, a pair of scissors, and other school supplies. These backpacks will be distributed to children in need who are headed back to school across the globe.

This project is yet another example of how we do the work of God in this world through our hands, and how a greater sense of God’s love is at work in our lives, as we do those things which proclaim Christ’s love to the world.
