TORRINGTON, CONN (SZS) — The Slovak Zion Synod (SZS) is launching the first of several mobile device applications that will continue to modernize communications within the Synod. This makes our Synod the first of the 65 ELCA Synods to launch a native app. Originally announced at the Assembly of the Slovak Zion Synod in January, these apps will be rolled out for mobile devices in the remaining months of this year and throughout the year 2014.
The first app, which launched August 19 on Apple’s iOS App Store, will function as a companion app for SlovakZionSynod.org, the Synod website. The app, called “Slovak Zion Synod,” allows users to view news releases from the Synod website as well as social streams from the ELCA via Facebook and Twitter. The app is free to download and will receive regular updates as features are added.
This app was extensively tested in a beta program that took place concurrently with the ELCA 2013 Churchwide Assembly. Voting members of the Slovak Zion Synod were able to experience the app for the first time at the assembly on their iPads, which were also used for receiving, annotating, and organizing the assembly reports and materials. (In the same manner as the ELCA Assembly’s iPad use, our app will pursue a greater investment in “Caring for God’s Creation,” by eliminating the use of excess paper for each individual who uses the app.) The app was well-received by those who tested it by using the beta version to assist in the discovery of and completion of bug fixes prior to the app’s launch on the App Store.
The purpose of this app is to further facilitate communication between the Slovak Zion Synod and its members and congregations. Members of SZS congregations will be able to read about events occurring in their church–from their mission and ministries abroad, to activities and faith stories of congregations within the Synod. Connectivity through mobile devices is one of the many ways our Synod is keeping up with technological aids to ministry and thinking outside the box for the sake of Christ’s mission.
